Fred Hom has a strong background in medicine and academia. Their most recent position was as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where they retired in 2009. Prior to that, they served as the Medical Director of Respiratory Services, Pulmonary Rehab, and Pulmonary Function Lab at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Fred also held the position of Chair, Department of Medicine at the same hospital from 2012 to 2022. Throughout their career, they have had various roles in private practice, including as a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist. Fred has also served in leadership positions at Chinese Hospital, where they were the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and Co-Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Unit, as well as the Vice Chief of Staff. Additionally, they have worked as an Intensivist at Sound Physicians and gained clinical experience as a Clinical Fellow at UC Davis Medical Center and as an Internal Medicine Resident at California Pacific Medical Center.

Fred Hom completed their education in a chronological manner. Fred first attended the University of California, Berkeley from 1975 to 1977 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Biology, General. Subsequently, they pursued their Master of Science (MS) in Gerontology from the University of Southern California, which they completed between 1977 and 1979. Afterward, Fred attended Loyola University Chicago from 1979 to 1982, where they earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
