Shelby Martin has a diverse work experience in the education and customer service sectors. Shelby began their career as an Assistant Supervisor - Food Service at Moody Bible Institute, where they supervised student employees and served customers at the campus cafeteria. Shelby then worked as a Barista at Cafe Descartes, fulfilling coffee, tea, and pastry orders while maintaining a high standard of customer service. Shelby also gained experience in teaching and childcare roles at The Latin School of Chicago, where they served as a Senior Counselor, Substitute Teacher, Extended Day Team Leader, and Behavioral Aide. In these positions, they oversaw campers, facilitated activities, followed lesson plans, and provided individualized support to students with behavioral challenges. Additionally, Shelby worked as an English Language Assistant at Comodin Barcelona, supporting a lead teacher in a classroom of kindergarten students and teaching English language and American culture. Shelby most recently joined Christopher House as a Floater Teacher and Paraprofessional.

Shelby Martin completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services, General from Moody Bible Institute in the years 2014 to 2018. Shelby then pursued a Master of Social Work - MSW/MASJ degree from Loyola University Chicago from 2021 to 2024. Alongside their formal education, they obtained various certifications including Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, COVID-19 Mitigations, Chronic Conditions Training, DCFS: Mandated Reporter, EOCO: Harassment, Discrimination, and Retaliation, IDHR: Illinois Department of Human Rights, PCC: Protecting Chicago's Children, Suicide Prevention and Awareness, and Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. The certifications were received between 2021 and 2022 from institutions such as Crisis Prevention Institute, Vector Solutions, and American Red Cross.
