Alita Godwin

City Clerk at City of Compton

Alita Godwin has dedicated her life to public service. Alita grew up in Los Angeles; however she has lived her entire adult life in the City of Compton. After graduating from Gardena High, Alita began working (temporary) for the Compton Police Department while attending Harbor College. On July 1, 1982 Alita was hired by the City of Compton, City Clerk's Office. Alita worked in various positions within the Clerk's office ultimately being appointed on January 13, 2004 as the 2nd African American Female City Clerk. Alita was elected to the position of City Clerk on April 19, 2005. Alita has worked for the City of Compton, City Clerk's Office for 36 years.

Alita is a member of the City Clerk's Association of California (CCAC), International Institute of Municipal Clerk's (IIMC) and Christian Clergy United Network Action Team (CCUNAT) (Executive Secretary). Alita served as the former President of the Compton School Site Council for Dominguez High School (2-year term), Circle of Love Women Organization (1-year term) and Board Member of the Compton Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union. On January 31, 2007 Alita was awarded the designation of Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. In 2008 Alita received her Notary license. On January 7, 2015 Alita was certified by the County Clerk to perform Marriage Ceremonies. On June 26, 2018 Alita was awarded the designation of Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Alita is an active volunteer for the City of Compton Veterans Stand Down, as well as a participant with other various community programs within the City of Compton.

Alita is married to Ranard Godwin and the mother of two sons, Tyree and Juwan. In August 2014 Alita welcomed her first grandchild. Alita has lived in the City of Compton for more than thirty years and is a member of Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the City of Compton.
