Duncan is located on the southern half of Vancouver Island, in the heart of the Cowichan Valley - the traditional lands of the Quw’utsun (Cowichan) First Nation on Vancouver Island.

Located between the provincial capitol of Victoria and the City of Nanaimo, Duncan is home to a population of approximately 5,000 residents and serves as an economic hub for the Cowichan Region, which has a population of approximately 80,000.

Duncan provides healthcare, retail services, professional services, and cultural tourism to the growing Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Duncan is a major business centre for the key industries of the regional economy: fishing, farming, forestry, and tourism. Duncan prides itself on its local businesses and thriving arts and music communities.

Proudly living up to the name “The City of Totems”, Duncan has over 40 beautifully carved totems scattered all around the City. The downtown features a number of heritage buildings, a large array of small, exquisite shops, and a quality selection of restaurants catering to all tastes. The City of Duncan is a member of the CVRD, a regional government of both electoral areas and member municipalities. Along with the City of Duncan, the CVRD is composed of the municipalities of North Cowichan, Ladysmith, and Lake Cowichan.
