The City of Florence, chartered in 1890, is located in Florence County, South Carolina at the intersection of I-95 and I-20. The city is the county seat of Florence County and a hub of an eight county area known as the "Pee Dee Region" of South Carolina. The city occupies a land area of approximately 20 square miles and serves a population of approximately 37,000. The CIty operates under the council-manager form of government. Policy-making and legislative authority are vested in a governing council consisting of the mayor and six other members. The Mayor and three members of Council are elected at large. The remaining three members of Council are elected by district.
