Phillip Sanchez began their career in law enforcement in 1980 as Deputy Chief of Police at the Santa Monica Police Department. Phillip held this position for thirty years until joining the City of Pasadena, CA in 2010 as Chief of Police, a role they currently hold.

Phillip Sanchez completed their education at various institutions. Phillip obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from the University of Redlands in 1988. Subsequently, they pursued further education in the field of Public Administration, earning certificates from the FBI Southwest Command College and John F. Kennedy School of Government, Senior Management Institute for Police in 2004. Sanchez also obtained certificates from the POST Executive Command College in Leadership and Futures Studies from 1988 to 2000, and from the FBI National Academy in 1997. Furthermore, they completed a Master's degree in Homeland Defense and Security from the Naval Postgraduate School between 2007 and 2009.
