Onyx Finney has an extensive work experience in various roles and positions. Starting in 1998, they served as a Project Assistant at Temple University's Institute for Survey Research, where they were responsible for managing payroll, editing documents, conducting interviews in Spanish, and maintaining the office database. In 1998, they also worked as a Research Assistant II at the Crime and Justice Research Institute, where they conducted interviews and developed reports for the American Humane Society. Following that, from 2002 to 2009, they worked as the Marketing and Communications Program Coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2009, they became the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Painted Bride Art Center, where they served until 2010. From 2011 onwards, they held the position of Principal and Chief Creative Officer at The Creative Nous. In 2015, they joined the Johnson House Historic Site, Inc. as the Director of Marketing Communications until their departure in 2019. Most recently, Onyx Finney has been working at the City of Philadelphia as the Director of Communications since 2024.

Onyx Finney completed a Master of Science degree in Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University from 2023 to 2024. Prior to that, they obtained an Entrepreneurial Leadership Certificate in Business Administration and Management from Cornell University in 2021. Onyx also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, although the field of study is unspecified. In addition, they have an Event Leadership Certificate from Temple University in 2005 and a high school diploma in Drama from Creative and Performing Arts. Onyx also completed a Board Governance Program Certificate from the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania in 2003.
