On July 4, 1798, our city was named Richmond in honor of Revolutionary War Colonel John Miller's Virginia birthplace. Richmond was incorporated in 1809. The population of Richmond, KY was 37,206 in 2025. Richmond is the third-largest city in the Bluegrass region (after Louisville and Lexington) and the state's seventh-largest city. Richmond is situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is conveniently located alongside I-75 between Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN.
