Pius Opendi Ochola

Contributor: Document Development Committee on Point-of-Care Testing for Infectious Diseases at Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute

Pius Opendi Ochola has a wealth of experience in the medical field. Pius began their career in 2010 as the Medical Director of Laboratory Services for Africa Infectious Disease Village Clinics. In this role, they were responsible for overseeing all clinical laboratory activities, coordinating laboratory logistics, interpreting and reporting laboratory results, and more. Pius also participated in writing and reviewing standard operating procedures and actively participated in laboratory investigations and trouble shooting. Additionally, they attended to HIV/AIDS patients and their family members in the Mbirikani Clinic and Hospital.

In 2013, they became the Medical Officer In-Charge at Nairobi Women's Hospital, where they assumed responsibility for oversight of all clinical operations and coordinated clinical and laboratory services. Pius also attended to all clients/patients, made appropriate diagnosis and plan therapy or referrals, developed monthly duty rota for all doctors in the clinic, and developed monthly payrolls for all the doctors in the clinic.

From 2014 to 2015, they held various roles, including Flight Doctor at Starlite Aviation Group, Laboratory Director at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Medical Doctor at T. Wendo Hospital. In 2015, they also became the Director of Medical Services at Tabernacle International Hospital, where they were actively involved in setting up the hospital and developing a business model to create a viability and profitability in the health care business.

In 2017, they took on the role of Consultant for the American Society for Microbiology, and also became the Medical Doctor at Gaichanjiru Catholic Hospital. At Gaichanjiru, they were actively involved in setting up the hospital, planning with limited resources to produce good results, training staff on results oriented approach to meet targets, and managing all patients of all age groups. Pius also did Caesarean Sections on over 200 mothers so far with conditions requiring C-sections and non has complicated, as well as organized CMEs for the staff.

Since 2010, they have also been a Contributor for the Document Development Committee on Point-of-Care Testing for Infectious Diseases for the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, participating in the consensus process by reviewing and submitting input on draft documents.

Pius Opendi Ochola has a long and varied education history. Pius obtained their MD from Makerere University in Uganda between 1997 and 2002. Pius then attended the Medical Laboratory Training School in Jinja, MOE, Uganda from 1990 to 1993 and obtained their MLT in Medical Lab Technology. In 2008, they completed a Fellowship in Clinical Microbiology from the University of Utah School of Medicine. Pius also holds a Specialist in Microbiology certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, which they obtained in October 2010. In 2013, they obtained a Masters of Public Health (MPH) from Concordia University, Nebraska in the field of Public Health. Pius also holds two medical board certifications, one from the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council in 2004 and one from the Kenya Medical and Dental Practitioners Board in 2013.
