John Engates

Field Chief Technology Officer at Cloudflare

John Engates is the Field Chief Technology Officer at Cloudflare. John has also served as the Client Chief Technology Officer at NTT Global Networks Incorporated and as a Board Member of the Open Compute Project Foundation. Prior to that, they were with James Avery Artisan Jewelry and Potrero Medical.

Engates began their career with Rackspace in August 2000, where they eventually rose to the position of Chief Technology Officer. During their time with Rackspace, they helped build some of the company's first service offerings, racked servers in the data center, and helped create OpenStack. John also helped define Rackspace's legendary Fanatical Support.

Today, Engates spends most of their time traveling the world and speaking with customers about transforming their businesses and moving their IT to the cloud. John is a regular speaker at industry conferences and gatherings on subjects like self-driving cars, drones, the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, machine learning and AI, mobile, cloud, big data and cyber security.

John Engates received their Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from The University of Texas at San Antonio. John then attended The University of Texas at Austin for their Master’s Degree. Afterwards, they obtained their certification from Amazon Web Services in AWS Technical Professional. Lastly, they got their certification from PADI in Open Water Diver.

John Engates reports to Matthew Prince, CEO & Co-Founder. They work with Harnish Kanani - Chief Customer Officer, Emily Hancock - Chief Privacy Officer, Sr. Director, and Jennifer Taylor - Chief Product Officer.
