Horkan Smith has a long and varied work experience. Horkan began their career in 1987 as a Co-operative student at IBM, where they worked for six different co-op quarters in IBM's Boca Raton and Delray Beach facilities, working on a variety of tasks such as C, Xenix, LZW compression, x86 assembler & REXX. In 1991, they joined SAIC as a Senior Programmer, where they worked on a large scale clinical information system and a DOD prototype medical ID smart card. Horkan then moved to Oacis Healthcare Systems in 1994 as a Senior Programmer, where they worked on interface programming with a variety of systems to the Oacis Gateway++ server. In 1996, they joined Scientific Atlanta as a Software Engineer, where they wrote the server side for runtime modem provisioning and interfaced the modem authentication server (RADIUS). In 1998, they joined Media4 as Technical Staff, where they were part of the development team for the Media4 ADST project. In 1999, they joined UTM systems corp, inc. as Technical Staff, where they wrote and adapted code for RSA digital signatures, 3DES encryption, Apache server modules, Apache CGI, Windows low-level floppy IO, browser plugin(s) and general communications and interface work. In 2001, they joined EchoStar Technologies Corporation as Senior Principal Engineer - Embedded, where they were the SAGE Home Automation System security lead and SAGE Gateway software architect. Finally, in 2016, they joined Cognosos, Inc. as Lead Engineer, where they worked on building a new type of Wireless Sensor Network, an enabling technology for the Internet of Things.

Horkan Smith attended the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1986 to 1992, where they earned a degree in Information and Computer Science (ICS).
