Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU Healthcare
The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the country’s oldest and largest housestaff union, representing more than 22,000 resident physicians in California, Florida, Illinois, New England, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Washington, D.C. CIR represents the interests of our members by negotiating the best possible contracts governing salary, benefits, hours and working conditions. CIR contracts aim to improve not just housestaff salaries and working conditions but to enhance the quality of patient care within the hospital. In addition to negotiating great contracts, CIR seeks to improve the well-being of members as well as the communities in which members work through innovative Quality Improvement initiatives, neighborhood health programs with underserved populations, and membership community events such as Women in Medicine and Physicians of Color programs. CIR is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), an organization of over 2 million members united by a belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide. SEIU's Healthcare division is the country's largest healthcare union, with more than 1.1 million members in the field, including doctors, nurses, LPNs, lab technicians, nursing home workers, and home care workers.
