Robert L. Miller

Director at Common Sense Media

Robert L. Miller, the president and CEO of Miller Publishing Group LLC (MPG), began his career in magazine publishing in 1974 when he joined Time Inc. in New York in the controller’s department. He ascended through the ranks, assuming a number of senior management positions, most notably publisher of Sports Illustrated at 33, the youngest in the magazine’s history. In 1991, Mr. Miller was named president and CEO of Time Inc. Ventures (TIV) based in Los Angeles, where he oversaw Time Inc.’s regional, special interest, and international titles. His portfolio consisted of 17 domestic and eight international magazines, including Sunset, Southern Living, Parenting, Travel & Leisure, Cooking Light, Health, and Time International. His most successful launches were Martha Stewart Living and Vibe.

In 1996, upon leaving Time Inc., Mr. Miller purchased its interest in Vibe and, in partnership with Quincy Jones, created Vibe Ventures. Vibe was named one of Adweek’s top 10 up-and-coming magazines in 1996, 1997, and 1998 and received an award for “general excellence” (the magazine industry’s most prestigious award) in 2002.

MPG was formed in 1997 following the acquisition of Spin (Vibe Ventures becoming Vibe/Spin Ventures), reinforcing MPG’s position in the young adult music and pop culture category. In 1997, MPG purchased Where, an international visitor’s guide published in over 45 markets worldwide.

Mr. Miller was born in Los Angeles and grew up in San Francisco and Darien, Connecticut. He received a B.A. in American civilization from Williams College in 1971 and an M.B.A. from the Columbia School of Business in 1974.
