We are a collective of experts in building neighborhood leadership to advance safety -- the groups on the ground that do the work day in and day out to mediate conflict, get people in crisis into supportive services and put youth on a path away from violence and to stability. We represent and support the dozens of small, nonprofit, community-led grassroots organizations that, for decades, have been helping to forge peace, with little support or official recognition from policymakers, elected officials or funding agencies. Investing in the community-based public safety leaders is the key difference-maker in stopping violence, ending mass incarceration and setting the nation on a transformational course toward a shared safety model rooted in systems of care, healing and community self-determination.

Brian has over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, including leading and training employees, conducting investigations, and managing budgets. Brian has also been an adjunct instructor for Missouri Police Chiefs' Association Charitable Foundation Command College.

Aqeela Sherrills is the Executive Director at [Community Based Public Safety Collective](/org/community-based-public-safety-collective). Aqeela is also a national speaker, trainer, and strategist on issues related to violence prevention, public safety, and social justice.

Sherrills has over two decades of experience as an organizer and advocate. Aqeela is a founding member of the Men's Social Justice Leadership Network, a national organization of Black male social justice leaders, and served as its first Executive Director. Aqeela also served as the National Training Director for the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice Initiative at the Alliance for Safety and Justice, where they developed campaign and strategy for what became the Number 1 crime survivors’ network in the US.

Sherrills is a leading voice in the movement to end mass incarceration and build safer communities. Aqeela has testified before the United States Congress, and their work has been featured in [The New York Times](/org/new-york-times), [The Washington Post](/org/the-washington-post), [The Wall Street Journal](/org/the-wall-street-journal), MSNBC, CNN, and other national media outlets.

Rob McGowan is the current Director of the White House CVIC Initiative at the Community Based Public Safety Collective. Rob has also previously worked as the Associate Director of Organizing at Community Asset Development Re-defining Education (CADRE). In this role, they were responsible for developing and implementing issue-oriented campaigns, developing parent leadership skills, and facilitating meetings and community events. Rob has also been involved in organizational strategic planning and has supervised and mentored entry-level community organizing staff. Rob has a commitment to improving community safety and has worked to build relationships with strategic partners, including allied organizations, policy makers, and the media.

Rob McGowan has a certification from USF Corporate Training and Professional Education in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate.

David has also worked as an Associate Director of Organizing at Community Asset Development Re-defining Education - CADRE. David has experience in developing and implementing issue-oriented campaigns, as well as developing parent leadership skills and political capacity through trainings and one-on-one mentoring. David also has experience leading and facilitating meetings, parent trainings, community building events, committee and informational meetings and community action events. Additionally, David has experience assessing self, team members and organization for strengths and areas for ongoing improvement, as well as participating in organizational strategic planning process and applying strategic plans to organizer work plans. Furthermore, David has experience supervising and mentoring entry-level Community Organizing staff, member-volunteers, canvassers, interns, and external volunteers. Lastly, they have experience creating, supervising, and evaluating organizing staff work-plans, as well initiating and fostering relationships with strategic partners including allied organizations, funders, policy makers, and the media.

David also has a BA from California State University-Dominguez Hills in Africana Studies / Theirtory. David is currently a certified Transformational Life Coach and provides coaching for transformation.

Jen Gannett has a passion for identifying and strengthening systems, policies, supports and funding opportunities.

As Development Director, her work supports CBPS workers to do their work safely, equitably and with their physical and mental health centered.

Jen has a broad suite of nonprofit leadership and development skills developed over the course of more than a decade. Jen has worked with CBPS organizations for nearly five years, supporting the growth of Newark Community Street Team since its early years. Her work with NCST includes the organization's award of a grant to create the first trauma recovery center in the city.

Based part-time in New Jersey, Jen holds a J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School and is an alum of [Tulsa Remote](/org/tulsa-remote). She serves on the board of Humble Warrior Collective and the Clean Water Advocacy Center.
