Job purpose

The primary responsibility of the Psychiatrist, MD will be to assist the Chief Clinical Officer in the delivery of an effective, efficient program of psychiatric services to adults and children, with particular emphasis on services essential to psychopharmacological services; integrated health services; effective diversion to outpatient community-based programs; liaison with medical community; team consultation; integration of primary and behavioral health care; and promotion of quality assured managed care service system.

The Psychiatrist will directly report to the Chief Clinical Officer or their designate. Regular evaluations, as per Heartland's personnel policies, will be conducted by the Chief Clinical Officer or their appointee at least once a year. Additionally, the Psychiatrist will receive supervision from the Psychiatric Department Lead and will closely collaborate with other administrative staff and clinical program delivery staff to ensure effective service provision.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Diagnosing Mental Health Conditions: Assess patients to determine if they meet the criteria for specific mental health disorders in an outpatient clinic. This role will conduct thorough evaluations, including medical history reviews, and psychological assessments, to reach an accurate diagnosis.
  • Developing Treatment Plans: Develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to the individual's needs. This may involve prescribing medications, recommending psychotherapy or other evidence-based therapies, and providing guidance on lifestyle modifications.
  • Evaluation: Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
  • Medication Management: Prescribe and monitor medications used in the treatment of mental health conditions. They assess the patient's response to medication, adjust as necessary, and educate patients about potential side effects and interactions.
  • Collaborate with Other Healthcare Professionals: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care providers, social workers, and dentists, to ensure coordinated and holistic care for their patients. This role may consult and collaborate with colleagues to determine the most effective treatment approaches.
  • Monitor Progress and Follow-up Care: Regularly assess the progress of their patients and adjust treatment plans as needed. Monitor the effectiveness of medications, evaluate the impact of therapy, and provide ongoing support to help individuals achieve their treatment goals.
  • Interdisciplinary Care: Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide crisis intervention and assessment for patients seeking care or referred to by healthcare professionals.
  • May provide consultation service to community health providers.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, or Psychiatric Physician Assistant
  • One year of postgraduate training in an accredited residency program
  • Valid Licensure for the practice of psychiatry; State of Kansas
  • Board Certified in Adult and/or Child Psychiatry, State of Kansas
  • Valid DEA Certificate
  • BLS Certification
  • Experience working in a mental health setting preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic and assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Working conditions

Physical requirements

  • Moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Moves throughout the building to meet with employees, patients, or visitors.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Frequent communication with patients about their experience at the health center. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as tablets, scanners, printers, and phones.
  • Adhere to process protocol or procedures.
  • COVID vaccine required

    • Hours Mon-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM (as needed)
