Kevin Garrett

Kevin Garrett became Concord’s Director of Athletics in February 2010 after 15 seasons as the Mountain Lions’ head baseball coach and a year as Concord’s interim Director of Athletics. Garrett has enhanced the academic development of Concord’s student-athletes by implementing the department’s study hall program. He’s also approved cost-saving transportation policies and started fund-raising initiatives that feature annual events including the Elimination Dinner (held in April) and the Golf Outing (held in July). Under Garrett, Concord has finished 2nd in the WVIAC President’s Cup standings in 2009-10 and 2010-11 – the highest finish in CU history. In Garrett’s time as Athletic Director, Concord has won eight WVIAC championships, five WVIAC Player of the Year awards, and four WVIAC Coach of the Year honors.

The Mountain Lions have appeared in the NCAA tournament competitions seven times, including Concord’s first NCAA National Champion. As Concord’s baseball coach, Garrett guided the Mountain Lions to four WVIAC Southern Division titles, the 2001 WVIAC Championship – Concord’s first in 40 years – and three NCAA Tournament appearances. His 355 career victories are the most in program history. Under Garrett, Concord produced 32 All-WVIAC first-team players, eight NCAA All-Americans, 20 NCAA All-Region players, and three NCAA Regional Players of the Year. Five of Garrett’s players went on to sign professional contracts. Garrett won the WVIAC Coach of the Year award three times -- 2001, 2003, and 2008. His 2008 team finished 35-15 and set a single-season victory record. His final team, in 2011, posted a record of 29-9, setting a single-season winning percentage record of .763. A native of Pineville, W. Va., Garrett attended Bluefield State College on a baseball scholarship and majored in education. As a baseball player, Garrett set a BSC career and single-season records -- and was a multi-time WVIAC leader -- in stolen bases. He was later voted into Bluefield State’s Baseball Hall of Fame. Garrett graduated from Bluefield State in 1989 and then joined the Raleigh County, W. Va. school system as a high school physical education and special education teacher and a baseball and football coach. Garrett and his wife, Robin – a Special Education Specialist for Mercer County Public Schools – have been married for 25 years. They have a son, Bo, and a daughter, Taylor.
