Director Of Spiritual Engagement at Congregation Beth Sholom

Amalia Haas has extensive work experience in various roles related to spiritual engagement and community development. Amalia served as a Rabbi-in-Residence at Oberlin College Hillel starting in 2023. Prior to that, they worked as a Chaplain at the Cleveland Clinic, where they also served as a Chaplain Resident from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, they became the Director of Spiritual Engagement at Congregation Beth Sholom. Before that, they worked as a Creative Director, focusing on climate and bee education, at Camp JCA Shalom, The Shalom Institute since 2017. In 2009, they founded Bee Awesome, LLC and served as the Chief Executive Officer, promoting climate crisis awareness and habitat restoration through experiential programs centered around the Jewish calendar, texts, and bees. Furthermore, they worked as a Chaplain Intern at the Cleveland Clinic in 2019. Lastly, they served as the Hillel Director at the Cleveland Hillel Foundation from 2000 to 2005, where they contributed to the establishment of Jewish programming and created a thriving Russian Jewish student club.

Amalia Haas has a diverse education history that spans various fields and institutions. In 1987, they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Women's Studies from Oberlin College. Following this, they pursued a Teaching Certificate in Judaic Studies from Michalala Teacher's College, Jerusalem, between 1992 and 1994. In the same period, they also studied Jewish/Judaic Studies at Machon Pardes.

Continuing their education, Amalia Haas obtained a Master of Education degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University between 1994 and 1997. From 2000 to 2002, they participated in the GreenFaith Fellowship program.

In 2017, Amalia enrolled in Yeshivat Maharat, where they completed their Rabbinical Ordination in Religious Education in 2020. During this time, they also pursued additional fellowships, including the iEngage Rabbinic Fellowship at the Hartman Institute and the Interdenominational Rabbinical Fellowship at Hazon/Rabbi Sid Schwartz, both in 2017-2018.

In 2019, Amalia Haas completed a course on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Integrative Psychiatry. The same year, they engaged in training as a Holding Space Consultant for patients and families impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic at the Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath, and Death.

Most recently, in 2021, they completed a course in Cognitive Based Compassion Training (CBCT) at Emory University.

Apart from formal education, Amalia Haas has obtained additional certifications. Amalia became a Reiki Practitioner Level 1 through the Cleveland Clinic in February 2021. In 2014, they received training as a Master Beekeeper from Dee Lusby, the Founder of the American Organic Beekeeping Movement. Additionally, they completed a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) at the George Jones Farm in Oberlin, Ohio, in August 2010.
