Jim Mair has a diverse work experience in the field of music. Jim co-founded the Kansas City Jazz Alliance in 2011 and held the position of Artistic Director. Jim also worked as an Artist/Clinician at Conn-Selmer, Inc. since 1992. In 1999, they retired as a Professor of Instrumental Music and Jazz Studies at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Jim served as the Music Director and Performer at Cascone's Italian Restaurants from 2003 to 2018. Mair also co-founded the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in 2003 and worked as its Artistic Director until 2011. Earlier in their career, they were a Jazz Radio Host at Boise State Public Radio and an Associate Professor of Music at College of Southern Idaho. Additionally, they worked as a Jazz Instructor at the International Music Camp Inc. from 1989 to 1999.

In 1984, Jim Mair attended the University of Mary and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education in 1988.
From 1988 to 1990, they pursued further education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed a Master of Arts degree in Music Pedagogy.
In 1988, Jim Mair also participated in the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, focusing on Jazz Studies.
Jim went on to receive a full fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School in 1989 and 1990, specializing in Jazz Performance.
More recently, in January 2015, Jim Mair received an Honorary Degree, HonLCM, from the London College of Music at the University of West London.
In addition to their academic qualifications, they also obtained a Hockey Coaching Level 2 certification from USA Hockey in August 2014.
