John Dover has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries. John started their career in 1997 as a Trumpet Player at Lair Hill Club. In 2006, they worked as an Admin Assistant at Heffernan Insurance Brokers until 2011. During this time, they also played the trumpet and provided back-up vocals for TNSF (The New Sound of Funk) from May 2006 to September 2007. In 2008, John founded John D Music, a company that organizes events to connect musicians with their communities. In 2010, they worked as a Trumpet Clinician, creating and conducting workshops in schools and music stores. John was then endorsed as a Bach Artist and Clinician for Conn-Selmer, Inc. in June 2011, where they performed as a guest artist and clinician for various educational institutions and music stores. In 2014, they ventured into creative writing, owning and creating the fictional character Johnny Scotch and founding the website johnnyscotchjustice.com. Finally, in 2018, they joined Willamette Writers as a Board Member and Director of Visual Media.

John Dover's education history includes two main periods of study. From 1993 to 1996, they attended the University of North Texas and pursued a field of study in Jazz Studies. Following this, they enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2002 and completed their studies in Trumpet Performance in 2003. In addition to their formal education, John obtained a certification as a Bach Trumpet Artist and Clinician from Conn-Selmer, Inc. in May 2013.
