Sinéad Walsh, PhD

Head of Data Science at Contactability

Sinéad Walsh, PhD has a diverse work experience in the fields of data science, astrophysics, particle physics, and research.

Sinéad is currently working as the Head of Data Science at SmartFinancial since April 2023. Prior to this, they served as a Senior Data Scientist at Scanalytics Inc. from February 2020 to March 2023.

In their role as an Astrophysicist at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee from April 2013 to February 2020, Sinéad designed all-sky searches for continuous gravitational waves and led efforts to compare different search methods. Sinéad also developed a hierarchical follow-up procedure to distinguish signal from noise candidates.

Before that, they worked as a Consultant Software Developer at SIMOC from April 2019 to September 2019. Sinéad was also an Astrophysicist at the Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik (Albert-Einstein-Institut) from October 2015 to June 2017.

During their time as a PHD Candidate in Particle Physics at Ghent University from December 2008 to December 2012, they focused on measuring the top-quark pair-production cross section using the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Sinéad developed analysis methods and a framework for effectively analyzing large datasets.

Earlier in their career, they worked as a Research Intern at SCK-CEN in August 2008 and as a Summer Research Assistant at NUI Galway in July 2007, where they assessed the feasibility of Piezo-Actuated Tip-Tilt Mirrors for telescope applications and utilized MATLAB for data analysis.

Sinéad Walsh, PhD pursued their higher education at the University of Galway from 2004 to 2008, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Physics and Astronomy. Following this, they furthered their academic journey at Ghent University from 2008 to 2012, focusing on Physics. Sinéad successfully completed their Doctor of Philosophy degree, earning their a Ph.D. in Physics.
