Reed Chewning

Associate Professor of Education, Director of Child and Family Studies at Converse College

Professor Chewning is an educator professor. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Clemson University, Master of Education from Converse College, and Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Art History from Wofford College. She was a National Board Certified Teacher. Her specialties are secondary and middle-level education with K-12 classroom experience teaching English and social studies. Dr. Chewning joined the Converse Education Department in 2015 after teaching in the English department at Limestone College, where she was a two-time recipient of the Fullerton Teaching Excellence Award.

Professor Chewning teaches secondary and middle-level methods courses, literature for the child, secondary and middle-level clinical, middle-level philosophy and school organization, adolescent development, and assessment and pedagogy. She is the program director for middle-level and secondary education. She advises undergraduate secondary education minors and MAT candidates in the middle-level or secondary education programs.

Dr. Chewning enjoys sailing with her husband and two children when she is not standing on a pool deck as a stroke and turn swim official. Her favorite part of being a professor at Converse is the lasting connections she makes with her students.
