Starting in 1989, Dr. Montella worked at Jefferson Medical College, where they served as the Director of Quality and Safety Department of Ob-Gyn. During their tenure, they successfully led patient safety and quality improvement projects, collaborated with key stakeholders, and achieved regional and national quality benchmarks. Joseph also played a vital role in developing the Jefferson Hospital TeamSTEPPS and Crew Resource Management project, contributing to the hospital's overall success.

Dr. Montella's contributions extended beyond the clinical setting. Joseph served as the Interim Chair of the Department of Ob-Gyn, overseeing the business management, finance, and operations of a 135-member staff and a $10 million operating budget. Through strategic planning and collaboration, they turned a significant deficit into a positive bottom line and enhanced patient and physician satisfaction scores.

In 2014, Dr. Montella obtained certifications as a Certified Physician Executive and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality. These certifications further demonstrate their commitment to excellence in medical management and healthcare quality.

In 2015, they joined Cooper University Health Care as the Vice President of Medical Affairs, responsible for leading organization-wide initiatives to improve quality and safety, reduce readmissions and length of stay, and enhance physician and staff engagement. As the Chief Medical Officer, they oversaw the Medical Staff office, ensuring compliance with credentialing, bylaws, and peer review processes. Dr. Montella played a crucial role as Co-Champion of the organization-wide Quality and Safety Management Pillar.

Additionally, Dr. Montella has contributed to the field of obstetrics and gynecology as a Site Reviewer for the Safety Certification in Outpatient Practice Excellence (SCOPE) Program, conducting assessments of outpatient Ob-Gyn offices and providing recommendations for patient safety improvements.

Joseph Montella, MD, MS, CPE completed their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Thomas Jefferson University. Joseph also obtained a Master's degree in Healthcare Quality and Safety from Jefferson School of Population Health. As part of their education, they completed a residency in Ob-Gyn at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology at UC Irvine. Prior to their medical education, Joseph earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biology, General from the University of Scranton. In addition to their educational background, they have obtained several certifications including Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Certified Physician Executive, TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer, and Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality.
