Mikala Tai

Head Of Visual Arts at Creative Australia

Mikala Tai has extensive work experience in the arts and cultural sector. Mikala has served as the Head of Visual Arts at Creative Australia since 2020. Prior to that, they were a member of the Chinese New Year Festival Advisory Panel at the City of Sydney from 2016 to 2020. Mikala also worked as the Director of the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art from 2015 to 2020. In addition, Mikala Tai has served as an Editorial Advisor for UnMagazine from 2015 to 2017 and as a Sessional Lecturer & Tutor at the University of Melbourne from 2014 to 2017. Mikala was also a Board Member at Bus Projects from 2015 to 2016. Mikala Tai has worked as a freelancer, undertaking various curatorship, project management, and programming roles for clients such as Art Basel, National Gallery of Victoria, and Stripe. Mikala served as the Creative Director of Supergraph: Contemporary Graphic Art Fair from 2013 to 2015. Furthermore, Mikala Tai worked as a Lecturer in Art Theory at RMIT University from 2012 to 2015, and as the Cultural Program Manager at the Melbourne Fashion Festival from 2009 to 2013.

Mikala Tai earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Contemporary Chinese Art from UNSW between 2007 and 2015. Prior to that, they attended the University of Melbourne from 2002 to 2006, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Art History with a double major in Art History & Cinema Studies. Mikala also completed a Diploma in Creative Arts with a focus on Theatre Studies at the University of Melbourne from 2002 to 2005.
