Qualities I value in my colleagues
Regarding the "how do you prefer to work": It really depends on the task, but that is my most productive time :D I value: -honesty, in so far as it's delivered tactfully. -efficiency, in so far as it's not at the risk of growth and learning -politeness, in so far as it's not dishonest -patience, in so far as it's not at the risk of a customer not getting taken care of -creativity, in so far as it's done with integrity and for good -ownership, in so far as it's with the collective goal in mind -curiosity, in so far as it doesn't become nosiness or gossip -team spirit, in so far as it's a healthy and respectful team -reliability, in so far as it's not at the detriment to a person's mental health -integrity, in so far as it's not used as an excuse to be brutally honest and tactless -adaptability, in so far as it's not the fall back of being unprepared for everything in the world -empathy, in so far as it's not your core identity to just feel everyone else's problems -sense of humour, in so far as you're reading the room and being respectful -work ethic, in so far as it's not at the detriment of your mental health and family -tenacity, in so far as there being a time when you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em -compassion, in so far as it's not at your own detriment -loyalty, in so far as it doesn't cloud your judgement -openness, in so far as it's healthy, safe, and respectful for all -ambition, in so far as it doesn't result in you stepping on someone's throat -bias toward action, in so far as you're prepared for the consequences -self motivation, in so far as it's not the only direction you're ever given access to
My communication style
I will try to be as casual and direct as possible. Lofty promises, honeyed words, and inaccurate info need not apply. I will use A LOT of analogies and stories, because that's how I relate. I can sometimes be very direct and come off as a jerk, but that's due to my autism and ADHD (I was diagnosed early enough in life that I have learned that it is difficult for some folks to see past in my communications). I will often say the first phrase that comes to mind, but then think of another word that fits the meaning better, so knowing the "ok, I'm just going to say it, and you may need to let me clarify" aspect of me is key; this is why I often prefer written communication because then I can rephrase as much as I want before I send. But something everyone needs to know: I will never say something deliberately to be hurtful, so if I offend or hurt you, please know it wasn't my intention and ask for me to clarify what I meant. :)
My pet peeves
Be genuine, be respectful, have compassion for people, don't engage in gossip or fabrication rumors... If you have an issue with someone, just speak to them about it respectfully - chances are it's an issue of conflicting communication styles, nothing more. Ultimately, I hold to the Wil Wheaton rule: don't be a D***. :)
Fun fact
I'm an avid Mason and Shriner, and I have 2 dachshunds who (aside from my son and partner) I love more than life itself.
Personal Q&A
If you didn't have this job, what would you be doing instead?
I'd probably continue running my Consultancy firm. I run a firm that started out as Sales and Marketing and has grown into Customer Success, User Experience/User Interface, HR/Culture consultancy. Or I'd be a counsellor/therapist, I just love helping people - though, I didn't go into that because of a severe inability to not internalize others' pain.
What do people misunderstand about you?
I'm not arguing with you. I'm likely just throwing ideas around in my head and talking to myself out loud about them... Once an idea gets in my brain, I need to discuss it to fruition, either by myself or with someone.
How do you like to receive feedback?
The same way I like to give it: 1:1 What are you doing right? What are you doing wrong/could you improve on? What skills/solutions/successes can we leverage to help you improve?
When are you most productive during the day?
Mid-afternoon to pre-evening is a great time, or after everyone is in bed and it's me and my headphones.
What was the last book you read?
Re-read: Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut New read: Arthur by Stephen R. Lawhead
What part of your job gives you most energy?
Probably a tie between: Nailing a solution for a customer's problem & Closing a difficult deal
