Tobias Philippi

Localization Manager at Crunchyroll

Tobias Philippi has a diverse work experience spanning various industries and roles.

Tobias began their career as a Tournament Supervisor at GIGA TV in 2005, where they organized the "Counter-Strike AllStars" competition and managed all logistical aspects of the event.

In 2008, they joined Turtle Entertainment GmbH as a Specialist League Operations, responsible for planning and supervising professional gaming tournaments. Tobias'srole involved creating schedules, maintaining competition rules, and handling participant communication and dispute resolution. Tobias traveled extensively, primarily to Asian countries for international events.

From 2001 to 2008, Tobias worked at ClanBase BV, starting as a supervisor for amateur level pan-European tournaments and quickly progressing to higher-level supervision and eventually joining the Human Resources department.

Tobias then took on a Working Holiday role at W.I.N.G. in 2011, where they gained experience in an unspecified capacity.

Tobias embarked on a freelance translation career in 2003, working independently as a translator.

Since 2013, Tobias has been associated with Crunchyroll, initially working as a Localization Specialist before advancing to the position of German Manager and subsequently Germany Market Manager. Currently, they hold the role of Localization Manager.

Tobias Philippi began their education in 1998 at David-Roentgen-Schule Neuwied, where they pursued their Abitur and studied subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering. Following this, from 2003 to 2008, they attended Stiftung Universität Hildesheim, specializing in Translation, English, Spanish, Dutch, and Electrical Engineering. From 2006 to 2008, they also studied Japanese at Volkshochschule Hildesheim. In 2008, they enrolled in the Japanese Culture Institute Cologne, where they focused on Japanese studies until 2010. Subsequently, Tobias pursued Asian Studies with a specialization in Japanese at The University of Bonn from 2012 to 2021, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree. In 2014 and 2015, they further deepened their knowledge of the Japanese language at the University of Tsukuba.
