Mark Cancian is a Senior Adviser for International Security Programs at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where they have worked since 2015. Additionally, they serve as an Adjunct Faculty Member at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, teaching a graduate course in Defense Analysis. From 1996 to 2006, Cancian was the Director of the Land Forces Division at the Office of the Secretary of Defense and subsequently held the position of Chief of the Force Structure and Investment Branch at the Office of Management and Budget from 2007 to 2015. With extensive military experience, Cancian served as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1970 to 2007, participating in significant operations including the Iraq War. They are an alumnus of Harvard Business School, having completed their studies there between 1977 and 1979.
