Shing-Leng Chan has a long and varied work experience. In 2022, they became the Principal Scientist at Curiox Biosystems and Adjunct Research Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. From 2013-2022, they were a Research Assistant Professor at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore, NUS, and a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Surgery, NUS. They worked on cancer initiating cells in clinical tumor samples and patient derived xenografts (PDX). They also generated a biobank of 30 PDX that were well annotated with exome sequencing and RNA seq data. From 2007-2013, they were a Senior Research Scientist at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore. From 2004-2007, they were the Cell Biology Group Leader/Acting Director of Research and Operation at ViaCell Singapore. They oversaw the operation of the research facility in Singapore and worked on in vitro expansion of hematopoietic stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells from cord blood and evaluation of transplant efficiency using xenograft assay. Lastly, from 1995-2004, they were a Research Fellow at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology. During this time, they worked in the field of Program Cell Death and identified protein interacting partners of the death receptor Fas (CD95) and inhibitors of BclXL function by HTS using extracts from nature products.
Shing-Leng Chan obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and MSc in Zoology/Animal Biology from the National University of Singapore between 1984 and 1989. Shing-Leng then went on to earn their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Toronto between 1989 and 1995. In December 2020, they obtained a certification in Biomedical Responsible Conduct of Research from the CITI Program, A Division of BRANY.
