Cybera is a not-for-profit technology-neutral organization responsible for driving Alberta’s economic growth through the use of digital technology. Its core role is to oversee the development and operations of Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure — the advanced system of networks and computers that keeps government, educational institutions, not-for-profits, business incubators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of technological change.

At its core, Cybera is the architect and guardian of CyberaNet, the ultra high-speed internet network that connects Alberta universities to an exclusive, secure international network. Institutions like the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal University, Grant MacEwan University, SAIT and NAIT are connected to CyberaNet. In Alberta, students and researchers depend on CyberaNet every day for their research and education internet traffic –  although they may not know it. Alberta’s Research and Education Network, CyberaNet, runs seamlessly behind the scenes. 

In addition to running this network, Cybera coordinates pilot projects and services that put this network to use, to help Alberta innovate. With offices in Edmonton and Calgary, this pan-Alberta agency is home to unbiased technical experts who are respected around the world for their pioneering work.

The Data and Cybersecurity Team at Cybera Inc. is responsible for safeguarding and optimizing Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure. This team employs a combination of data science and cybersecurity expertise to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of digital resources used by government, educational institutions, and other entities. They monitor and analyze network data, develop security protocols, and coordinate responses to potential threats, thereby maintaining the secure and efficient operation of CyberaNet, Alberta’s high-speed research and education network.
