Jonathan started their career as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Texas at Austin, where they worked on developing the Swift parallel scripting language for the domain of distributed computing. Jonathan then went on to work as a Research Aide at Argonne National Laboratory, where they applied Swift to scientific applications and provided Swift as "software as a service."

In 2012, Jonathan joined HomeAway (now Vrbo) as a Software Architect. Jonathan spent seven years at the company, developing a secure communication platform between travelers and owners.
