Franklin Cockerill III completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry from Creighton University in 1973. Following this, in 1978, they completed their residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In 1980, Cockerill pursued a fellowship in Infectious Diseases from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and completed it in 1982. Franklin then pursued a fellowship in Clinical Microbiology from the University of Toronto from 1988 to 1989. Subsequently, in 1989, they attended the University of Toronto's Mount Sinai Research Institute for a post-doctoral program in Molecular Microbiology, which they completed in 1990.
