Joseph Perez has extensive work experience in the field of healthcare and medicine. Joseph began their career as a Family Practice Resident at Beth Israel Medical Center from 1998 to 2001. Following this, Perez served as a Medical Officer in the US Navy from 2001 to 2005, providing medical services to active duty Coast Guard personnel and their dependents.
In 2005, Perez joined the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as a USPHS Officer. Joseph later deployed as a Team Lead to a public health service clinic in Chalmette, Louisiana, providing emergency and routine medical services in the aftermath of a hurricane.
In 2007, Perez joined the U.S. Coast Guard District 5 as the Chief Medical Officer. Joseph served as the Senior Physician responsible for the healthcare of over 5000 active duty Coast Guard personnel in the district. Perez held various roles within the U.S. Coast Guard, including Chief Medical Officer and Chief, Operational Medicine Division, and Chief Executive Officer, Field Medical Director, Officer in Charge, and Chief Medical Officer. Joseph supervised and led medical staff, implemented health-related policies, and served as the Medical Waiver Authority for applicants and commissioning candidates at the USCG Academy. Perez also served as the Team Doctor for numerous NCAA Division 1A sports and Club Sports.
Additionally, Perez held roles as the Chief Medical Officer for USCG Atlantic Area and Homeland Security Task Force Southeast. Joseph served as the Senior Medical Officer at Joint Task Force Guantanamo's Camp Delta Clinic in 2013, providing medical services to enemy combatant detainees and helping formulate DoD policy around detainee care.
Outside of their direct medical roles, Perez was involved with professional organizations. Joseph served as the Treasurer and Board of Directors member of the Uniformed Services Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians from 2008 to 2014. Joseph was also a Delegate and a Board Member of the Board of the Uniformed Academy of Family Physicians Chapter.
Perez was recognized as a Fellow by the National Hispanic Medical Association in 2011.
