Jonathan Sturm

Jonathan Sturm serves as the Concertmaster for the Des Moines Symphony and Academy since 1991, where responsibilities include orchestral leadership and community engagement. From August 1998 to May 2023, Sturm held the position of Morrill Professor of Music at Iowa State University, directing the Music History and Theory division, teaching a comprehensive music history sequence, and performing as part of the Amara Piano Quartet. Sturm also acted as Past-President of the Iowa State University Faculty Senate, leading significant initiatives on Research Ethics and Diversity and Inclusion. Previous roles include Associate Dean and Special Advisor at Parks Library, and Associate Professor at Drake University, where Sturm advanced the string area and contributed to departmental growth through grant writing. Academic qualifications include a Doctor of Music from Indiana University Bloomington, along with Master's degrees and a Bachelor's degree from prestigious music institutions.
