Doug DeFrees has extensive experience in leadership and scientific research spanning several decades. Currently serving as Chair of the Board of Directors for California Destination Imagination since July 2013, Doug promotes problem-solving and teamwork skills among students. Doug's previous roles at IBM from 1989 to November 2021 include Chair of the Volunteer Outreach Council, where over $325,000 was granted to community organizations, and Research Software Engineer, providing critical computing services. As a Tech Coordinator at We Teach Science Foundation, Doug facilitated mentoring programs for students in math and science. Doug has also contributed to the YMCA of Silicon Valley and the Molecular Research Institute in various capacities, including board member and financial officer. An academic background includes a PhD in Chemistry from UC Irvine and a BS in Chemistry from Clarkson University.

Destination Imagination, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-led non-profit organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. The organization seeks to connect students to opportunities emerging in the global digital economy. The most popular education offering is the Challenge Program, where student teams solve open-ended science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) and service learning Challenges and present their solutions to trained Appraisers. Founded in 1982, Destination Imagination has impacted more than 1.5 million students.
