Sarah Murphy

Director of Marketing and PR at Detroit Historical Society

Sarah Murphy has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Sarah started their career as an ESL Marketing Assistant and Permissions Assistant at the University of Michigan Press, where they gained experience in drafting publicity and product copy, as well as handling customer service inquiries. Sarah then moved on to become the Promotions Manager at Wayne State University Press, where they were responsible for planning and executing publicity outreach for new titles and managing social media and email marketing programs.

In 2009, Sarah transitioned to being a self-employed Freelance Copywriter/Graphic Designer, where they specialized in writing promotional copy and designing various marketing materials for corporate and nonprofit clients.

Since 2015, Sarah has been working at the Detroit Historical Society, initially as the Marketing and PR Manager and later transitioning to the role of Director of Marketing and PR. In this position, they lead the marketing department and oversees the planning and execution of all marketing activities for the Detroit Historical Museum, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and Detroit Historical Society. Sarah has successfully managed national media campaigns and led social media and digital marketing efforts for the organization.

Throughout their career, Sarah has demonstrated expertise in marketing, public relations, copywriting, graphic design, and project management, making their a valuable asset to any organization.

Sarah Murphy earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, where they studied from 1999 to 2003. Following their undergraduate studies, they pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in English Language and Literature at Wayne State University from 2005 to 2010.
