Douglas Sweetland has extensive work experience in the animation industry. Douglas started their career in 1994 at Pixar Animation Studios, where they worked as an animator on various successful films such as Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Finding Nemo. Douglas also served as a directing animator on Monsters, Inc. and a supervising animator on Cars and the short film, Boundin'.

In 2007, Sweetland directed Presto, a short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. Douglas managed all creative aspects of development and production, including collaborating with the production designer and character designer. Douglas also traveled the world to give a lecture on the film's story process and visual development.

Sweetland then joined Sony Pictures Animation in 2010 as a director, where they worked until 2012. Douglas later joined Motorola Mobility in 2012 as a co-creator and helped develop the concept and story for an interactive short film called "Windy Day" specifically designed for smartphones.

From 2013 to 2016, Sweetland served as a co-director at Warner Animation Group, where they contributed to films such as The Lego Movie and Storks.

In 2016, they worked as a writing consultant at Google for a brief period. Subsequently, Sweetland joined Alcon Entertainment in 2017 as a co-director, and they left the company in 2019.

Currently, Douglas Sweetland is working as a creative director at DigitalFish from 2022. Prior to this, they also established their own company, Sweetland Sweetland & Sweetland, in 2019, where they played the role of creator/director.

Additionally, outside of their animation work, Sweetland had a role as the lead screamer and rhythm guitarist for a band called The Dirty Garfields in 2017.
