Jim Vlasblom

Co-Founder, CIO & CPSO at DNAstack

Jim Vlasblom is the Co-Founder, CIO, and CPSO at DNAstack. Jim has also worked as a Scientific Programmer and PhD Candidate at the Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto. During their time as a Scientific Programmer, they conducted analyses of large datasets derived from affinity purification/mass spectrometry, culminating in several publications in high impact scientific journals. Jim also applied machine learning algorithms towards the integration of various evidences for the classification of proteins or protein interactions. In addition, they created an interactive web site to host published results using Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL (LAMP). Furthermore, they designed the "OrthoNets" Java plugin for the open source Cytoscape network visualization platform, and managed its implementation by summer students. Lastly, they taught several classes covering topics including graph clustering, proteomics data analysis, and the use of common bioinformatics software such as Cytoscape, R, and Perl. Jim has also hosted workshops for up to 60 attendees at international conferences, to educate users on the application and use of our Java/Cytoscape software tools.

Jim Vlasblom completed their Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto. Jim then went on to complete their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioinformatics from the University of Toronto.
