Stu Gillespie

Senior Attorney at Earthjustice

Stu Gillespie is a senior attorney with the Rocky Mountain Office where he focuses on protecting their public lands and wildlife. Prior to joining Earthjustice, he was a trial attorney with the Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, where he represented the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies in a variety of public lands cases. Among other accomplishments, he helped defeat an attack on BLM’s authority to protect spotted owl habitat in western Oregon’s old-growth forests. His passion for the West’s great outdoors and his commitment to public lands protection inspired him to make the transition to Earthjustice, where his values and work-life align.

A distinguished graduate of Harvard University and the University of Colorado Law School, Stu also clerked for the Colorado Supreme Court and then the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. Prior to pursuing a law career, Stu was a professional cyclist in Girona, Spain from 2004–06 as a member of the Slipstream Cycling Team. He still loves riding and frequently commutes to work by bike. He can’t wait to teach his two young kids, Ellherie and Findlay, how to ride bikes.
