Caral is an active member of many professional organizations and has served on the National Advisory Board for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC); is past President of the Baton Rouge chapter of the AAPC and long-term member of the Coding and Nomenclature Advisory Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Caral was honored with Honorary Membership in the American College of Emergency Physicians for her work in coding and reimbursement on behalf of the specialty of emergency medicine.
She is a frequent author and speaker on healthcare management topics including outpatient facility coding and billing, hospitalist medicine, medical record documentation policies, healthcare compliance, effective communication within healthcare systems, specialized coding compliance training for physicians and residents, COBRA/EMTALA and CPT/ICD-9 coding and billing. Caral also co-authored the Emergency Medicine Study Guide and Emergency Medicine Specialty Examination for the Advanced Board of Medical Coding (ABMC); authored the Emergency Medicine Study Guide and Emergency Medicine Competency Examination published for Ingenix/AAPC; and co-authored the current Emergency Medicine Study Guide and Competency Examination for the AAPC. She is the past consulting editor and currently serves on the editorial advisory committee of ED (Emergency Department) Coding Alert. She serves on the editorial advisory boards of ED Management (for whom she publishes a quarterly ED coding column), OPPS Insider, and APC Advisor.
