Laurie Kerns' work experience begins in 1991 as an Individual and Family Therapist at Iowa Health System, Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Laurie then moves on to Youth and Shelter Services as a Program Coordinator for an Adolescent Treatment Facility from 1997 to 1999. Following that, Laurie joins Des Moines University as a Coordinator for the Standardized Performance Assessment Center from 1999 to 2004. Laurie then transitions to the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners as a Consultant from 2001 to 2004, and later becomes the Managing Director of the National Center for Clinical Skills Testing from 2004 to 2005. Laurie's most recent role is with Education Management Solutions, where they currently serve as the SVP of Education Services, a position they have held since 2015. Prior to that, they were the Vice President of Education Services from 2009 to 2015, and the Director of Training from 2005 to 2009.

Laurie Kerns has an extensive education history. Laurie obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Therapy from Drake University from 1985 to 1987. Following this, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling at Drake University, which they completed from 1992 to 1996. In 1998, Laurie obtained certification as an Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certified Counselor from the State of Iowa.

Laurie is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Interdisciplinary Leadership at Creighton University, which they started in 2019 and is expected to complete by 2023. Additionally, it is worth noting that they had some involvement with the College of Design at Iowa State University between 1979 and 1982, although the specific degree obtained during this period is unknown.
