Betsy Cottel has extensive experience in human resources, holding various leadership roles at E. & J. Gallo Winery since 2005, including Vice President of HR, Client Strategy & Total Rewards, and Vice President of Human Resources - Client Strategy. Responsibilities include consulting on human resources strategies across commercial businesses, overseeing organizational design, talent management, and change management, as well as leading HR initiatives in operations, supply chain, and sales domains. Prior to this, Betsy held positions such as Senior Director and Director of Human Resources at Gallo, where oversight encompassed policy development, employment planning, and employee relations. Betsy also gained experience at Gallo Sales Company and Valley Wine Company in sales and recruiting roles. Education includes a BA in History from the University of Puget Sound and additional training from Cornell University ILR School and the University of Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Ernest and Julio Gallo started E&J Gallo Winery in 1933. Julio, who died in 1993, was in charge of making the wine, and Ernest, who died in 2007, was responsible for selling the wine. Gallo wines include Turning Leaf, Twin Valley, Single Vineyard, Red Bicyclette and Ecco Domani. Joseph Gallo, Ernest's son, is chief executive, while a number of other family members work for the company.
