Shuru Chen

Director, Battery R&d at Element Energy

Shuru Chen has a diverse work experience in the field of battery engineering and research. They started their career as an Undergrad Research Assistant at Xiamen University, where they developed Sn alloy and C/Sn composite anodes for Li-ion batteries. They then continued their research at Xiamen University as an M.S. Research Assistant, focusing on ordered mesoporous carbon/sulfur nanocomposites as cathodes for rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries.

After completing their master's degree, Shuru joined EC Power as a Summer Intern in 2014. They later joined Penn State University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Ph.D. Research Assistant. Their doctoral thesis focused on the development of cathode materials and electrolytes for high-energy lithium-sulfur batteries. Additionally, they served as a Team lead for optimization and scale-up of micro-sized Si anode, and performed full cell performance verification in 2 Ah pouch cells for a U.S. Department of Energy-funded project.

In 2016, Shuru became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where they invented novel localized high concentration electrolytes to enhance the cycle performance and safety of high-energy lithium metal batteries.

They then joined General Motors in 2018 as a Battery Researcher, working on battery research and development. They were later promoted to the role of Senior Battery Researcher, where they continued their work until 2022.

In 2022, Shuru joined Meta as a Battery Cell Engineer, focusing on battery cell development. Currently, they are working at Element Energy as a Staff Battery Engineer, starting in 2023.

Overall, Shuru Chen has gained extensive experience in battery engineering and research, with a particular focus on lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries.

Shuru Chen pursued their education in a chronological manner, focusing on their academic growth and expertise in the field of science and engineering. Shuru began their educational journey at Xiamen University, where they obtained their Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from 2003 to 2007. Building upon their undergraduate studies, they then pursued a Master's degree in Physical Chemistry with a specialization in Electrochemistry at the same institution from 2007 to 2010. Continuing their educational endeavors and seeking advanced knowledge, Shuru Chen enrolled at Penn State University, where they successfully completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering from 2010 to 2015.
