Sam McCandlish is a Co-Founder at Anthropic. Sam was previously a Research Lead at OpenAI where they worked on the AI Safety team and built a team to study the science and scaling of ML. Their work on scaling laws predicted and helped pave the way for large-scale results including GPT-3. Sam is also a Postdoctoral Fellow at Boston University, where they work on the Simons Bootstrap Collaboration.
Sam McCandlish attended Stanford University, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Theoretical Physics. Their research focused on quantum gravity, tensor networks, and tomography. Prior to their time at Stanford, McCandlish earned a BS in Math & Physics and MS in Physics from Brandeis University. Their research at Brandeis University focused on active matter, biological self-assembly, gravitational microlensing, and quantum field theory.
The team at OpenAI works with Sam McCandlish on a daily basis to help him with their work in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that’s working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Large, general systems of today can have significant benefits, but can also be unpredictable, unreliable, and opaque: our goal is to make progress on these issues. For now, we’re primarily focused on research towards these goals; down the road, we foresee many opportunities for our work to create value commercially and for public benefit.
