James Murphy has a diverse work experience. James started their career as an Undergraduate Researcher at the University of Calgary, where they worked on a project focused on Human β-defensin-2 production during viral and bacterial co-infection. James then took on a Summer Research Placement at the University of Leeds, investigating the immunosuppressive properties of mesenchymal stem cells.
After completing their undergraduate degree, James joined the University of Leeds as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. During this time, they worked on multiple projects related to Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection. Their research involved various techniques such as isolation and culture of mammalian cells, nucleic acid extraction, qRT-PCR, ribosome profiling, and confocal immunofluorescence microscopy.
James also had experience working in the UK Lighthouse Lab Network during the COVID-19 pandemic. James served as a COVID-19 Diagnostic Trainer and Assessor and later as a COVID-19 Diagnostic Laboratory Support Scientist. In these roles, they were responsible for sample processing and data management for qRT-PCR testing.
