John Steven Cummins has a diverse work experience in the field of psychiatry and medical education. John Steven is currently serving as the Medical Director at Elgin Mental Health Center, where they previously held the roles of Associate Medical Director, Director of Medical Education, and Attending Psychiatrist. Alongside their work at the center, John is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. Prior to these positions, they worked as a Staff Psychiatrist at Advocate Aurora Health and as the Associate Medical Director for Inpatient Psychiatry at UI Health. John Steven has also held teaching positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago and as an MCAT/LSAT/GRE Elite Instructor at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions. John's earlier experience includes roles as the Chief Resident for Academics and Chief Resident in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri Health Care. John Steven Cummins attended Grinnell College from 1998 to 2001, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on Sociology and Gender and Women's Studies. John Steven then pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Columbia College Chicago, from 2003 to 2006. After that, they completed a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-medicine from Northwestern University, spanning from 2006 to 2008. Cummins then enrolled at the University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Medicine, where they obtained their Medical Doctor (MD) degree in 2014. Subsequently, they pursued a Residency in Psychiatry from 2014 to 2018, also at the University of Missouri-Columbia, School of Medicine.
