Ruth Cavanaugh

Flute Choir Conductor at Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras

Flutist Ruth Cavanaugh (she/her) is an advocate for lifelong self-expression through the arts. She has had the privilege of teaching music in the Elgin U-46 Public Schools, most recently, as the Director of the Larkin High School Choirs and the Wind Technique/AP Music Theory Instructor within the Visual & Performing Arts Academy.

Ruth began her flute studies in Caracas, Venezuela and is a student of Brazilian Choro music. She welcomes musical collaborations with musicians of all ages and enjoys teaching privately. She is grateful for her numerous music opportunities at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. She is excited about her new role as the EYSO Flute Choir Conductor, as it begins its second season.

Her awards include the Surdna Arts Teacher Fellowship, the Northwestern University Music Teacher Fellowship and the 2022 Elgin Symphony Orchestra Arts Educator Award.
