Jim Lucy has extensive work experience in the publishing industry. Jim started their career at Magazines for Industry (MFI) as an Associate Editor in 1981 and later became an Editor at the same company. In 1982, they joined McGraw-Hill as an Editor before moving to Endeavor Business Media, where they held the position of Editor-in-Chief for Electrical Wholesaling magazine & Electrical Marketing newsletter. In 1989, they joined Intertec as Chief Editor, a role they held until 1995.

Jim Lucy pursued their Master's degree in Communications from Rowan University (previously known as Glassboro State College) from 1975 to 1980. In 1985, they attended New York University and took classes in Electrical Design. Additionally, in 1982, they participated in a graphic design class at the School of Visual Arts. In 1978, Jim briefly attended the University of Maine, although their field of study during that time is unspecified.
