Marine Biogeochemical Scientist at Environmental Defense Fund

Mattias Cape is a Marine Biogeochemical Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund since April 2023, focusing on science-based climate solutions aimed at improving ecosystem health and addressing environmental justice concerns. In addition, Cape serves as an Adjunct Principal Investigator at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, leading research on the impacts of change on Greenland's populated fjords, and as Chief Scientist and Guide for the Sea Education Association, specializing in biological oceanography and marine ecology. Previous experience includes roles as a Senior Data Scientist at Scoot Science, an instructor at Western Washington University, and multiple postdoctoral positions at leading research institutions, where Cape conducted significant studies in oceanography and biogeochemistry. Academic credentials include a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, complemented by dual bachelor's degrees in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Applied Mathematics from UC San Diego.
