Diego Mellado has a comprehensive work experience that spans over many years. Diego began their career in 1996 at the European Commission, where they held a role as an EU member until 2010. Following this, they joined the EU Delegation to Egypt, where they served as the Head of Economic Cooperation Section from 2003 to 2007. Mellado then moved to the EU Delegation in Turkey, where they took on the role of Head of the Political Section from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, they joined the European External Action Service, initially as the Deputy Head of Division until 2013, when they became the Head of Division. Diego later served as the Ambassador from 2017 to 2021 and then as the Head of Communication and Public Diplomacy from 2021 to 2023. Currently, Mellado holds the position of Chief of Protocol since 2023 at the European External Action Service.
Diego Mellado obtained a Licenciatura in Derecho from Universidad de Granada from 1985 to 1990, followed by a Licence speciale in Droit européen from Université libre de Bruxelles from 1991 to 1992.
