Derek Mcburney

Derek McBurney has a diverse range of work experience in the technology and web development industry. Derek started their career as a Web Solutions Lead at the University of Calgary, where they managed the development and architecture of a Drupal platform for over 900 production websites. Derek then moved on to work as a Technology Solutions Analyst at the same university, gaining experience in full-stack development.

In 2008, McBurney started their own business, dmcb design, where they provided freelance web development, design, and consulting services to small businesses in Calgary. During this time, they also co-founded a non-profit organization called "my world, my choice!", where they served as a Founding Director and built the organization's website, designed the brand, and worked on program development.

McBurney also had the opportunity to teach a Web Design course at the Alberta College of Art + Design, where they developed their own course outline and helped students create their own websites using Adobe Fireworks.

Most recently, McBurney worked at Evans Hunt as a Head of Technology, leading the technology department and shaping the company's direction. Derek fostered a positive culture and ensured that colleagues felt safe, comfortable, and proud of their contributions. Prior to this role, they served as a Technology Lead at the same company, working alongside talented professionals to deliver exceptional results for clients using the right technologies and development workflows.

Derek McBurney pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, graduating sometime between 2001 and 2007. In addition to their degree, they also obtained several certifications, including the ThreeJS Journey from Bruno Simon in 2023, Professional Scrum Master I from Scrum.org in 2015, and ITIL V3 Foundations from CSME, Inc. in 2012.
