Amanda Woon's work experience begins in 2013 when they joined Monash University as a PhD student in the Purcell Lab. During their PhD, they conducted research on bat immunity using a proteomic approach and made significant contributions to understanding the bat adaptive immune system. Amanda also served as a teaching associate, coordinating and teaching laboratory tasks and tutorials for undergraduate students.
In 2017, Amanda became a research associate at Monash University, where they continued their research and contributed to the characterization of bat MHC class I molecules and the identification of viral epitopes presented by bat MHC molecules.
In 2017, Amanda joined Immunocore as a scientist specializing in antibody research. Their work included investigating the half-life of molecules and TCR-mimicking antibodies, protein engineering, and developing high-throughput methods of protein purification and cell screening. Amanda also utilized CRISPR to generate cell line tools.
During their time at Immunocore, Amanda took on the role of research operations manager on a part-time secondment. In this position, they coordinated the decommissioning of a Containment Level 3 (CL3) laboratory and the commissioning of a new on-site CL3 lab. Their responsibilities included asset management, supporting CL3 scientists, and liaising with key groups such as Health & Safety.
At Immunocore, Amanda also worked as a scientist in disease biology, focusing on the development of recombinant TCR-based therapeutics against infectious diseases such as HIV, HBV, and TB. Their expertise included protein expression, purification, ligand interaction analysis, and performing viral and cellular assays in a CL3 laboratory.
In 2021, Amanda joined Exogene Ltd., initially as the head of cell biology. Amanda then transitioned to the role of head of research & development, leading the overall research and development efforts of the company. Currently, they serve as a consultant for Exogene Ltd.
Amanda's most recent work experience is at the WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), where they are an entrepreneur scientist.
Amanda Woon received their Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours (BSc Adv Hons) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Monash University, which they completed from 2009 to 2012. Amanda later pursued their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the same university, from 2013 to 2017.
